BYD Tang
China name: 唐 · Export: Tang, Tan, Sealion 8
BYD's mid-size SUV series, sold as DM, DM-i and DM-p plug-in hybrids and as a battery-electric Tang EV. Export names include Tan (Brazil) and, in some markets, Sealion 8.
Generations & years
First generation from 2015
Plug-in hybrid SUV based on the BYD S6, with BYD's second-generation Dual Mode system.
Second generation 2018–present (EV 2019–2025)
Shown at Auto China in April 2018. The Tang DM got a facelift and the DM-i powertrain for the 2021 model year; the EV was facelifted for 2022 and the DM-p introduced. The DM-p was updated again in 2023 with restyled tail lamps. The Tang EV is no longer sold in China.
Powertrain, battery & charging
DM and DM-i: plug-in hybrid with a 1.5 L engine and BYD's hybrid system, generation depending on model year. DM-p: a performance-oriented 1.5 L turbo hybrid. EV: battery-electric with an LFP Blade battery.
Where to find the VIN
On most cars the VIN is visible at the base of the windscreen (driver side) and on a label in the driver-side door opening; check your registration document too.
China-spec vs export-spec
The Tang (first generation 2015, second generation 2018) and the Tang L (2025, on newer platforms) are different cars, so do not assume parts fit both. The Sealion 8 and Atto 8 names are also used for the Tang L, so confirm exactly which car you have. DM, DM-i, DM-p and EV versions have different drivetrains, and facelifts changed the front end. Charging inlets differ by market: China-spec cars use the GB/T standard and export versions are built for the destination market. Send the VIN.
